Heavy or Light
A good friend recently asked me if he should increase the weight in his workout, or drop it down and do more reps. I told him quite frankly, "both!" The idea behind both methods of training is sound and beneficial, so why not do both. Lifting heavier weights will increase strength, recruit more motor units through the CNS, and help to burn fat. More muscle=more fuel needed i.e; more fat to be burned. On the other side using lighter weights for more reps at a higher intensity will open up all the metabolic pathways helping to increase general prepared fitness and burn more fat during and especially after. This is a concept that the elliptical drones do not understand. In a number of different scientific journals you can find evidence that after engaging in an interval style, or high intensity circuitous training regiment your body will burn fat for up to 48 hours after at an elevated pace. So why not spend less time in the gym and get better results. The body can adapt quicker than we think, which will lead to a plateau or stagnation in training and results. It is under this premise that I say do both. Throw the body curves, that's what is is built for. Comments please.
